The Peel Ring

The ancient 13th century site of earthwork & timber castle. With foundations of 18th small mansion house

Macbeth, King of Scots. Was slain at the battle of Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire, 25th August, 1057. Some say he was mortally wounded by Malcolms lieutenant, MacDuff. Dying from his wounds later, some say he was executed...and this boulder in the field marks where this is reported to have taken place, not in Dunsinane, Perthshire, like Shakespeare would have us belive.

Whether it is exact or not, the battle happened, here or very near the vicinity, there's also Macbeths well, and to the north of the village, his cairn, where he was temporarily buried, (ive yet to visit) before his body was taken to the burial place of King's of Scotland...Iona.

Despite the connection, The Peel Ring is some 200 years later than Macbeth, there remains a mound & motte, from the original earthwork & wooden castle, and the foundation of a later small mansion house built 1471 and occupied for 300 years.
